When I review products, I try to compare them with other products that have the same function and purpose. So this "Party Cube" is a new incarnation of the many iPod docking stations out there already. Even though I don't own any of these, you can compare this one with the Philips DC290/37 Docking Clock Radio for iPod/iPhone (Aluminium) and iHome iP90 Dual Alarm Clock Radio with AM/FM Presets and Dock for iPod and iPhone (Silver) and Logitech S715i Rechargeable Speaker for iPod and iPhone and many others by Bose, Klipsch, Altec Lansing, etc. You can see many of these here on Amazon or at the Apple Store web site.
I think what most have in common is the ability to plug your iPod or iPhone directly into the unit. That way, the iPod charges at the same time you're using it, and you can also use the unit's buttons instead of the iPhone's to change songs, etc. I assume you can also watch a movie on the small screen and get some better sound out of the unit's speakers. Also, another common element is the rechargeable batteries and AM/FM radio and clock. So, what does the Party Cube have to offer?
Unfortunately, I can't compare the sound output from all of these together, since I don't own them, but the sound from the Party Cube is actually pretty good. There are two front-firing 1.5" speakers and two side-firing 2.5" speakers. The side-firing ones help to give more depth to the sound, as it bounces off walls and ceiling. I don't think you would get the same effect outside. This unit has a handle on top to make it a little more portable. It's also more compact than some of the other offerings, making it easier to find places to put it, with the added bonus of your iPhone sitting 'inside' the front and more protected than sitting on top. I'm not sure about the others, but this one comes with both AM and FM antennas that you can plug in, which really helps with reception in fringe areas or inside buildings. There are 6 station presets you can program. You adjust the radio stations with an 'up' and 'down' button, which I found tedious to move from one end of the dial to the other. The outer case seems rugged enough for outdoor (dry) use, being made of a metal grille and rubber. I think it's really meant to be portable to your party.
So overall, I like this unit, and it seems to be priced in line with other comparable ones. I think we will take it camping with us this summer. The radio will come in handy for local news and weather, and it runs many hours on one charge - important when you camp in non-electric sites. And since I don't own an iPod or iPhone, the Line In will work with my Creative Zen player. Overall, thumbs up.
