I have been a Logitech fan for many years and purchase their products for a lot of my computer accessories. Unfortunately, I have been burned one too many times on their headsets. So, when my last Logitech headset went the way of the dodo bird, I thought, "enough's enough!" After doing a lot of research, I settled on the Plantronics 770 Headset and it has satisified most, but not all, of my complaints.
My biggest complaint with every single Logitech headset I've used has been the comfort factor. Since I use my headsets to game, particularly online gaming, comfort is a huge selling point for me. The 770 succeeds in this requirement in a number of ways. The ear cups are very large and engulf my entire ear, as opposed to crushing them to my head. Bye-bye headaches.
Additionally, the engineering behind the way it fits on your head is perfect, if silly-looking. I never feel like I have to make the headset shape to my head; the bending wires easily stretch to fit, increasing the comfort. In fact, I could wear these for hours without really even noticing they're on. That said, they look like some prehistoric monstrosity cruel dentists would use on their patients to fix teeth and aren't in any way, shape or form hip.
The sound quality is great with booming bass and high quality highs. It feels full and deep, whether you're gaming or listening to music. I am really dubious that it's "3D Surround Sound," but it has a nice, full, well-rounded sound that I can't really complain. The sound does "surround" you, but for those looking for a headset to tell where, exactly, a bullet is coming from...keep looking. Also, the headset isn't a noise-canceling one; not a problem, but keep that in mind if you're wanting to shut out outside noises.
I have a few complaints. The first is that this isn't truly a USB headset, as you can see in the picture. It comes with a USB adapter, which works; however, the adapter is rather large, a little over an inch, and sticks out from your PC. Depending on where you put it, it's pretty easy to bump (especially if being used on a laptop) and seems like it could cause problems. I also had to return the first headset I got to Amazon because I was getting an annoying buzzing sound every once in awhile that increased in frequency as time went by.
The microphone, also, doesn't seem very stable. I've read some of the reviews here who've mentioned that the microphone started flopping around and I can see that happening. It moves up and down a bit too easily and quickly and I could easily see it becoming loose and hanging down, which is problematic.
*UPDATE* It has happened. The microphone won't stay up and locked. It just slides back down. While this is definitely not good, I will say that the people I talk to in Ventrilo do not notice a difference in the sound. But, it's still something to keep in mind.
Finally, the box it comes in (with no instructions), that stupid plastic thing companies like to enwrap their electronics in, really is the low point. Actually getting to the headset was one of pain and sliced knuckles.
Even taking into account the fact that the microphone no longer stays in place (which is very obnoxious) and some of the other minor issues I've mentioned, the Audio 770 is still an above average headset and I'm definitely glad I purchased. I'd recommend it to anyone who is tired of smashed ears and headaches.
