I was quite excited to find this dock by Macally since they usually make great products. I bought this for a bedside to use my iPod as an alarm clock. I liked that you can mount your iPod horizontally and that it is protected in the dock. I haven't liked the traditional alarm docks where the iPod mounts vertically on top of the clock radio in an exposed position. I am sure I will clumsily try to hit snooze and snap the iPod off the connector.
However, this dock does not live up to expectations. First, it is a royal PAIN to mount the iPod horizontally. Vertical docking is fine, but it would take me 10 to 20 seconds to get it in horizontally. There isn't enough clearance side to side to insert it in straight on. You have to slide it in at an angle and it isn;t easy to hit the connector right. Not worth it.
Also, the sound quality is quite tinny. I had a similarly sized logitech dock and the sound was orders of magnitude better. It is fine for podcasts, but not good enough for music.
The construction is cheap plastic and the unit is quite light weight. It doesn't inspire confidence in durability. In addition, they put a bright blue LED on the front for no apparent reason. I had to tape over it with electrical tape to prevent it from blinding me at night.
I am still looking for a good quality horizontal iPod dock.
