(More customer reviews)This review is on the basis of the MC50, which I own. I am very impressed with Philips microsystems, having owned now my 2nd MC50. Probably not nearly as well known for quality m/systems as Sony, Aiwa, and Panasonic, I think they are quite good and AMAZINGLY complex.
I am almost shocked by the keyboard remote and how many options there exists in operating this machine... almost like a small computer. The brochure must be 40-50 pages long; so you can see what I am talking about.
I used to have component equipment in the late 60's and early 70's with equipment such as AR speakers and a Bogen amp/pre-amp. I truly believe that the micro systems now for under $150 rival components which were then over $250 (which adjusted for inflation would be > $1,000 NOW.)
So I don't think you will go wrong with Philips in its MC line; however, the MC50 is much more powerful, fully electronic, has 2 speakers per cabinet and little w/wood cabinets. Also the MC320 is a real sexy little unit, with an ebony black plastic look, sort of a like an ebony piano.
So, bottom line, this seems to be an entry model, w/ a low price and I think it will be quite a good value for what you will pay.

The Philips MC-120 micro hi-fi system fits neatly on a shelf or armoire, yet comes loaded with enough features to rival systems many times its size. The 10-watt unit delivers rich, full-bodied sound enhanced by such features as Digital Dynamic Bass Boost, which augments bass at low, mid, and high volumes; Incredible Surround, which dramatically expands the sound field to greater depth; and Digital Sound Control, which offers several sound settings--such as jazz, pop, and rock--to produce optimum listening pleasure. Each bass reflex speaker (5 watts x 2) includes a 4-inch woofer encased in fixed metal grilles to ensure crisp sound at all frequencies.
The top-loading CD player (with front CD mirror) is compatible with CD, CD-R, and CD-RW formats, features programmable memory for 20 tracks, and includes repeat and shuffle modes. In addition, the player delivers an automatic recording level, which adjusts the volume among different CDs to a single consistent output for more enjoyable listening. To enhance recording, the mechanical cassette deck features a synchro-start feature that ensures a smooth opening when recording from CD. Radio listeners will appreciate the 40 included presets, more than enough for most radio markets, and the auto-store facility. The entire system responds to a 21-key remote control.
Other features unique to the system include a sleep timer with a preset time of up to 240 minutes, a wakeup timer, an eco power standby mode (which consumes less than 1 watt of energy), an auxiliary jack, a 3.5 mm stereo jack, and a mute function. The system carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
