(More customer reviews)Long-time musician here. Small home studio, lots of headphones and other gear around. I ordered the Pioneers just to plug into my small TV upstairs, but I spent some time trying them everywhere I could. My results are generally positive, with one big IF.
These cans are really comfy and look better than they should for the price. They sound pretty good, too, with strong bass and muted highs that keep things relatively smooth. Add a long cable, an extra extension cable, and two plug options... and you get nice full-sized (over the ears) headphones for the price of some cheap earbuds.
The big downside, for me, is that they really need some EQ. Otherwise, the low end dominates while the highs (upper-mids) seem muffled and overshadowed by the lows. Even bass lovers (hey gamers?) may find that far too much detail is lost in the highs here. Footsteps don't seem to crunch. The fire doesn't crackle. I notice the lack of tonal balance even more with music.
For an iPod, computer, or stereo rig that allows you to tweak the sound, these cans could be a great 'budget' choice. (Did I mention how comfortable they are?) But anyone like me, wanting to plug directly into a device and listen more or less 'as is', may want to look elsewhere if well balanced sound is important.
